Did you ever hear of the Italian evil eye? Someone put the hex on me and my baking today and gave me major agita (heartburn). It all started when I needed to boil some water and the handle came off of the pot on the stove with the boiling water. Lucky for me I was not burned and only had to mop up boiling water on the stove and counter.
You would think that I would be wise enough to see this as a sign from above warning me not to go into the kitchen and start another project. Not listening to my natural instincts I started the next project of baking oatmeal bread. I put the dough hook on my KitchenAid mixer and hear a very loud clunk and clatter noise. I knew right away it was not St. Nick and his reindeers on my roof. To my horror my KA mixer is doing a violent shimmy across my kitchen counter. I stop the KA and look into the bowl and know that there has to be some sort of metal inside all that bread dough. I reach into the sticky bread dough and pull out the KA round logo button which should sit at the top of my mixer. There is a little knob to keep it tightly in place and I guess it was loose and fell into the mixing bowl. DUH!
I phoned KA service center for help. Now the service center gal tells me to put a dime in one hand and a screw driver in the other hand. Is she kidding me? Do you all happen to keep a dime within reach and a screw driver next to your KA? So I run around finding the requested items. The dime is to be dropped into the clean mixing bowl. Did she not hear me say at the beginning of the call that my bowl was full of dough? So after I cleaned the bowl she patiently proceeded to guide me in making the proper adjustments to my bowl for balance. My dough hook is pretty beat up so I will be ordering a new one. She also had me turn my mixer over to see if all the little feet were attached. At that point I almost dropped the mixer and broke it and almost chipped the granite. They may want to remind you just how heavy that mixer is as I had forgotten. Thankfully it all worked out. I just have to order a new dough hook.
Do you believe that things happen in threes? I sure do. I have told my husband that when he flies back into town tonight he will have to serve me dinner. I am not taking any chances and going back into my kitchen unless he is prepared to watch me have my third disaster of the day. Oh and he needs to stop for some bread preferable one that has no metal parts in it!
You can find the bread recipe HERE but since I never finished the bread I have no idea how it tastes but the recipe did sound so good.
Have you ever had an off day in the kitchen?
Poor Joyce! If all the kitchen mishaps weren't enough, you had to deal with customer service... that's enough to send me over the edge. That little button that fell off the KA is where you can attach a lot of cool accessories. When my parents bought me my mixer 30+ years ago, they got accessories too... I've used the grater for slaw, shredded zucchini for bread, etc. Last Christmas I bought a KA for my daughter and I remember reading how to put a dime in the bowl to adjust the height. Of course, they expect you to have a clean bowl when you test it. Hope you have a better baking day tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteOh my... what a day you've had! Time for some new sauce pans!! I've never had my KA cover fall in the bowl like that, but I've noticed that it was very loose on a couple of occasions. So sorry that happened to you. I've tipped my KA over to read the numbers on the bottom and nearly dropped the darn thing - very heavy!! You have to clean the dust that accumulates on the feet every now and then.
ReplyDeleteTrue story - Rose Levy Beranbaum places a pencil in front of her KA while it's mixing bread dough. If the mixer starts walking towards the edge of the counter, the pencil will be the first thing to go crashing to the ground - when she hears the pencil fall, she runs to the mixer to keep it from doing the same. LOL!
Let's count customer service as number three and start over tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteThe biggest mess I ever made was to spill a full bowl of red liquid jello. It begin to gel to the floor, wall etc. before I could clean it up! Hope tomorrow is a better day!
ReplyDeleteMy Husbands family calls it the Malooch....(spelling??). Supposedly, I had it taken off me by my Husbands Uncle....I think he forgot how because I still am having bad luck. Anyway I told him I wanted to learn how to do it but it has to be taught on Christmas Eve.
ReplyDeleteSo lucky that you're not hurt. Take care :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband is half Italian so I know all too well about the Italian Evil Eye! Ha!
ReplyDeleteI think you should take a few days off...no work in the kitchen. Time for a little vacation from the kitchen.
Hugs!
Kat
What a crazy day! You are lucky that you weren't hurt with all of those mishaps. Just keep telling yourself that tomorrow is another day.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you weren't burned by the pan! The angels were with you. And I DO believe in the "things happen in threes." My family doesn't like to be in the kitchen with me after 2 disasters--they KNOW the 3rd can't be far behind. My mother has them, too, so do not feel alone. ((Hugs)) My KitchenAix mixer was bought in '88, and I keep waiting for a kerfuffle. Hope tomorrow is a MUCH better baking day!
ReplyDeleteI've had the handle fall off my pot also. Not fun. I use to keep a screwdriver in the kitchen for that pot but also for my frying pan. The handle never fell off, but it was always loose. Hubby was so kind and purchased me a new set of pots for Christmas 2 years ago. I didn't mind at all!!! Funny post!! Hope you can get back in the kitchen soon!
ReplyDeleteI got your comment today - so you do understand about having 'stuff' all over the house!
ReplyDeleteThat must have been quite a day. I'm glad that neither you or the mixer suffered any serious harm. Have a wonderful Foodie Friday.
ReplyDeleteOh, Poor One! What an ordeal and you've really painted a picture with your post today. I'm not giggling, no no Nannette, I'm not! :)
ReplyDeleteNow you have the perfect opportunity to go out to eat! You're too stressed out to enter the kitchen except to grab something from the fridge! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
LOL - My KA has been making weird noises lately and I'm getting a little worried. Hopefully, the 3rd thing isn't at my house!
ReplyDelete4 words: Its a full moon
ReplyDeleteSee this is why I dont cook or bake ... ;-)
Oh boy, bad kitchen karma, stay out of there, yes!
ReplyDeleteI know it was not good what happened to you, but the way you told it was so funny I did have to laugh111
I am sorry but I had to laugh! I think it comes in threes! Last year I was baking cookies and burned every batch. How can someone do that? Tomorrow is another day and I hope you kitchen has gotten over it's bad karma!
ReplyDeleteThank God! You were not hurt.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Q you asked. I never had the luck to have a day off from kitchen. My husband knows nothing to cook. And if ever I get a day off from kitchen then those are the days when we are on a trip. But I would love to have a day off and have food in my cozy sofa without doing anything.
Sorry for your bad day, and yes I do believe in things coming in three's. Thanks for stopping by,I'm a little late getting back to everyone, I had to take a day to clean and eat my rolls, bread being my weakness.
ReplyDeleteSandy
Oh my goodness, Joyce, what a baking day you had! I don't know about things coming in threes, but it does seem that there are some days when nothing goes right!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas...Kathy
I'm glad you weren't burned Joyce! I'd be devastated if my KA conked out on me!
ReplyDeleteI have had a malocia involving my computer...it went haywire after my husband updated my browser..it hasn't worked well since ;-(
OK, so you had the luck of the Irish, (which is no luck, :) )
ReplyDeleteHey did you order that new scraper beater..I want to get one..heard good things about them..
I let dh use my KA as I can't lift it anymore. I bought a bigger bowled Delongi which is lighter, but noisy.but I can manage it better.
Glad you didn't get hurt!
