"On your mark, get set, go!"
Those were the words of the judges at the watermelon eating contest on the 4th of July here on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Each child was given a 1/4 of a watermelon to consume.
After a few minutes some of the children were holding their stomachs while others kept up a frantic pace of eating their juicy watermelon, pits and all!
I have a feeling some of these children will never want to take a bite of watermelon for the remainder of the summer season.

Do you have fun memories of participating in a juicy and refreshing watermelon eating contest when you were a child on a hot summers day?

ReplyDeleteThat looks like such good old fashioned fun!!
ReplyDeleteCute post!! Love the mosaic.
ReplyDeletesticky fun....
ReplyDeleteOh, what a fun mosaic, and just looking at those watermelon photos makes me want some. Is there anything more fun and refreshing than watermelon in summer. Lovely mosaic.
ReplyDeleteKaren
What fun! This mosaic made me chuckle! Watermelon and kids ... perfect for the 4th of July -- or the summer!!!
ReplyDeleteYou've got some very enthusiastic watermelon eaters there, Joyce. Love your photos
ReplyDeleteThis one says summer to me! Fun mosaic! What a lovely outdoor area you have.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog. I do like the refrigerator, but if I had to do it again I would get the one with an ice dispenser in the door. We had that on our old fridge, but it was noisy and we never used the water (since our tap water is nasty) and I liked the sleek look. There is a design flaw that causes the ice cubes to fly out on the floor when you pull out the freezer drawer and a few always end up on the floor. And I don't recommend LG...its been repaired several times in the three years we've had it, luckily paid for by LG because of recurring issues.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful shots!!! I think all of them will have childhood memories of this...
ReplyDeleteFabulous ...
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! Looks like there was a ton of fun on Hilton Head this past Fourth of July. I've never been but it is on my vacation wish list. I would love to be near the ocean right now! Have a great rest of the summer! Anita
ReplyDeleteThis is so much fun, Joyce. I always enjoy watching kids gobble up the watermelon in contests. Greart mosaics!...Christine
ReplyDeleteOh hold me back baby, I love my watermelon! What fun!!! That's one cute mosaic girl.
ReplyDeleteGod bless and have a wonderfully juicy summer day!
Fun, fun.....
ReplyDeleteOh how I love a good cold juicy watermelon!
Joyce~I did a little backtracking...to that gator story to read to my hubs. We're still laughing over that post. Here we won't go outside cause we've been inundated with mosquitoes, which promptly transformed hubby into a full all out chemical warfare against the skeeters. Could you imagine what we'd do if there was a gator strolling by!! We'd have to sell our house and move into a tree house!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a young girl some one (had the audacity )to convince me that all the watermelon seeds I had consumed would grow into a watermelon in my stomach.
I wished I could grow watermelons in my tummy, heaven knows there's enough room in there to grow a nice crop of em.
You and I could develop a franchise of Gator and watermelon cuisine!
Sweet wishes,
Sara
Watermelon face plants! Who knew?
ReplyDeleteThat must have been so funny to watch. Good shots.
ReplyDeleteOmigosh that is so cute!!! Thanks so much for sharing the fun at MM. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time - who all entered that contest? Looks yummy. Sandie
ReplyDeleteFun mosaic! Who won, Joyce?
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun! They could at least give those kids seedless melons! :)
ReplyDeleteMine won't eat melon, strange kids!
If you ask me, that is how to ruin a good thing! The poor kiddies!
ReplyDeleteHow cute are they ?
ReplyDeleteI remember doing this and also the pie eating contest....they don't do that one anymore...
Hugs ~ Kammy
I don't think I ever participated in an eating contest. I do remember eating way too many plums in the summer and suffering a great deal :0)
ReplyDeleteFun watermelon photos!
I don't know that I would ever tire of water melon! However, I did participate in a banana- eating contest for a high school sorority and have not eaten one since--I pick them out of banana pudding :) Love your photos!!! Wish I were there!

ReplyDeleteNothing said summer more than watermelon! Wonderful pictures..
ReplyDeleteSO FUN!!! I also loooooved your Fourth of July mosaic. Americana at its best. And Mr. V's helmet and bike turned out AMAZING!!!
ReplyDeleteWow!! I can't believe that alligator shot. You were very brave to run out and take that.
I hope you're enjoying your Summer.
Mary Lou
What a fun mosaic!! I also just read your post about the alligator! :-D I'm sure I would have past your neighbor running. :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by. One of the main reasons the light fixture is still hanging, everyone I find is always out of my price range.
Oh Joyce, it's HOT and HUMID here also and I was thinking just yesterday I need some cold watermelon to cool me down. The worst part was my AC went out for three days! Of course, it waited until this humidity started and honey, I was miserable.
ReplyDeleteAre you getting those storms coming through every afternoon? They used to be nice and cooling, but now after their gone, everything is just darn sticky. Uggg, I hate that!
This was a great deal of fun. The photos are grand and you did a wonderful job with the mosaic. I hope the day treats you well. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteI love how you captured their expressions! I am enjoying reading through your older posts. you have a lovely blog and I look forward to readingmore.
ReplyDeleteLove watermelon too but never join any contest! Looks like fun. Great shots!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and not too filling, at least not for too long! Love the mosaic.
ReplyDeleteHi Joyce,
ReplyDeleteThat Watermelon contest looks so fun! I bet the kids have a blast. Thanks for stopping by my blog and helping me out with my question on how the page looks. I am new to blogging so I have lots to learn. :-) Your blog is great, just curious do you have recipes for eggless desserts? My youngest is allergic to egg and I'm always looking for new recipes. I have many, but always on the lookout to change it up for her. Hope you have a great weekend!
Blessings, Jill
Just look at those intense little faces trying to inhale the juicy watermelon! Great mosaic!
