Autumn Press Cookies...Foodie Friday

What does a person do when their A/C is not working and the repairmen are here for the next four hours? Bake of course and think cool thoughts. I bake for the troops. Since temperatures are still so hot in Iraq (120*), and these cookies are perishable in the heat, I am sending these to Afghanistan where the weather in the mountains is a bit cooler. Later this month I will post just how you can help our troops feel closer to home.

Snowflakes
1 cup shortening
1 3-oz. package of cream cheese
1 cup of sugar
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon finely grated orange rind
2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Cream shortening and cream cheese. Gradually add sugar and continue creaming.
Beat in egg yolk, vanilla and orange rind.
Sift flour with salt and cinnamon.
Add to creamed mixture.
Fill cookie press.
Shape cookies onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Decorate with colored sugar.
Bake 350 for 12-15 minutes.
Cool on wire rack.

  1. They look delish .. and since I dont cook or bake (lets be honest, I doubt my curry tofu 'egg' salad would be exciting to receive and it sure wouldnt stand up to traveling) how can I help?

  2. God bless you girlfriend. What a wonderful project you have going on there. I'm sure the troops appreciate and enjoy homemade goodies more than we will ever know. So pop and ice cube down your shirt and bake on!

Have a cool and enjoyable Friday....God bless!!!

  3. Your cookies remind me of the ones my mother used to make. I saw a million of these over the years as I was growing up. She also made beautiful birthday cakes for all the family. That's probably why I can't ice a decent cake... never had to learn. My daughter ended up with the Wilton pans and the cookie press. I decided I might be too old to learn!

  7. Joyce, first these cookies look wonderful, I love baking with cream cheese.

Next, I'm going to start a new monthly meme about doing things for others, such as your baking cookies for our troops. I'm going to do it on the first of every month, so that bloggers can add a link from any post they did in the previous month. They can participate every month or only once, whatever works. I'm hoping to share ideas, stories and inspirations for all without interfering with other memes. Let me know what you think.

I'll have to find out more about what you do here. I wonder if it is something our homeschool co-op could do?

  12. Greetings Joyce~ I'm finally back from my summer long blogcation.
Our summer is coming to a close fast. There's definitely a crisp breeze in the air, that's putting me in the mood for baking.
I admire your kind gesture of baking for our troops and with determination to go forth despite the AC.
My brother in-law served in Iraq with sand storms and temps hovering around 130 degrees. He soo looked forward to those familiar treats to remind him of home. I know packages are very important! Your cookies will be appreciated not just by the soldiers, but by their families too.

I've enjoyed catching up. Please stop by...I look forward to the return of your company.
    Sweet wishes,
    Sara

Hello, I have no doubt that you could quilt, I have a feeling you can do about anything you try. I, on the other hand am an o.k. cook but not a baker! I have never been able to master the art of making yeast work -Yikes!

  22. My son always turns the oven on for something even on the hottest days. I just shake my head and find a fan.
I am sure your efforts really make their day.

  23. aww, I love having cookies no matter what the season is. Chocolate chips is the favorite, and also some that are made of eggs. I like when you use the word "Autumn" instead of "Fall" ... growing up, everyone used "Autumn" ... i think "fall" is used only in America.

I hope you have your a/c back!

  28. Hi Joyce...these look sooo yummy! Just stop by...I saw your comment at Heidi's about not being able to see all the pics on some folks blogs. If the problem you are having is the pic being cut off on the right side, try adjusting your resolution on your computer to a higher number, via the control panel. On an older computer I sometimes use, I can't see the whole pic either, but I can see it on my newer laptop. Unfortunately, I can't adjust it high enough on my older computer...but I can see it fine on my newer one. I hope your's can be ajusted to a higher resolution...that may solve your problem.

  30. Joyce, What a really great gesture to bake for the troops. This type of cookie always reminds me of Christmas because that's the only time I ever pull out the cookie press from the pantry! Thanks for visiting my kitchen. If I didn't have those two pantries, I wouldn't have any room for all my STUFF! LOL
